We want to be among the first to congratulate the staff of the Yarmouth Vanguard for their part in helping to win four prestigious awards in the National Competition of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association.

The Canadian Community Newspapers Association is the national voice of the community press in Canada, and represents more than 700 English-language community newspapers, with a combined circulation of more than 12 million copies per week. The CCNA is dedicated to the excellence, credibility and economic well being of Canadian community newspapers through leadership, education, and communication.
The Yarmouth Vanguard has won three first-place awards and one second-place award in the annual Canadian Community Newspapers Association’s national competition.

Vanguard associate editor Tina Comeau took first-place honours in the best photo essay category and placed second in best feature series category. (Congratulations Tina!)

Vanguard Editor, Fred A. Hatfield, won the national award for best local editorial.

A series of advertisements written, designed and photographed by the news staff to highlight this newspaper’s sports coverage earned top honours in the best in-house promotion category in the Vanguard’s circulation class.

The three first place awards, were the most awarded to any one newspaper in any circulation class east of Ontario, in the premier awards categories!

The Vanguard was one of only four newspapers in all of Canada to receive three first-place premier awards!

The Vanguard has earned numerous awards in regional and national competitions since its founding in 1966. This is the first time the newspaper has won three premier awards in a year.

There were 3,308 entries in the various categories and winners were announced on Monday, March 12th, 2007.

Personal Acceptance of the Awards will be made easier by the CCNA which is, for the first time, offering each first-place winner in the Premier Award categories and Campus Division one night’s accommodation and a complimentary day pass on Friday, May 11th, 2007 in Winnipeg at the 88th annual Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) National Convention.

The pass gives the recipient full access to the day’s professional development sessions and networking opportunities, including the exhibit area, CCNA Presidents luncheon, and Better Newspapers Competition Awards banquet. So we can expect even better from the Vanguard Staff who will undoubtedly attend for the personal acceptance of these prestigious awards.

Congratulations to you all!

Webmaster Brian Hurlburt says, “When I started the Yarmouth County website, I had no idea that we’d gain so much attention in such a short period of time!”

When asked what he credits as the central reason for the website’s success, Hurlburt answers, “Well, I’d like to say I’ve done everything right! But when I started out, I had no idea what I was up against. I had no idea what I would have to learn to survive. In my case, the local church, not-for-profit and arts community got hold of our free services, and they continued to support us by telling their friends. Thanks to that, we have a huge number of loyal supporters today and that is the biggest contributing factor to our success.

A closer look however, shows that Hurlburt is being a bit modest. He is totally self taught, and yet the search engine optimization and online track record is remarkable.
